Jesus Christ - I didn’t come on Earth to bring Peace but Division

What did Christ mean when He said I didn’t come on Earth to bring Peace but Division?

If He didn’t come to bring peace, what more is there to save? Does salvation come with division? Would He be cool with Hitler? …All these questions and more, almost blew my roof away years ago when I came across this particular utterance of Christ in the gospel.

After listening to so many priests explain this statement in different versions, with almost the same meaning, my brain devised two defense mechanisms to survive this roof wrecking provocation.

1.     A different kind of Peace

Today, what we call peace is more of a compromise than it is what it should be.

“I’ll just look the other way for peace to reign” …this had become our reality of peace. God didn’t look the other way when Adam and Eve broke his trust Him, He brought them to book, yet, He continued being with them, watching and guiding their every move and making sure them and their descendants(mankind) remains on the path to salvation.

Making peace by ignore what is right; overlooking the truth and just letting it all slide is no peace at all. Its backyard diplomacy! Let’s make peace with them because they have more nuclear warheads, let’s make peace with them because they are richer, I’ll make peace because I know I can’t win, even if I am convinced what I stand for is true. Christ is totally against this kind of peace. His completely opposed to this kind of peace, a kind of peace that emerges from fear, gain, lust, fame, pride and list goes on. The kind of peace Christ gifted humanity is a kind of peace that generates from love and sacrifice. A peace that is not afraid to stand with the truth.

2.     Christ the Revolutionist

Throughout the gospel, Christ is known for speaking in parables, His fond of using things that happen every day to provoke his message in the heart of those paying close attention to his teaching. He gives you questions to ask yourself and your answers determine what you take home from His teaching.

I remember reading an article where a blogger was recounting his journey to stardom. His said, the very first post the brought him to the spotlight was a mistake. Instead of writing “19 years old rapper murders this beat” he wrote “19 years old raper murders this beat” and that particular mistake brought countless number of traffics than he could ever imagine to his site.

Provocation! Christ understood these 2000 years ago. He understood the ways of man. In order to get people to pay close attention to what you’re saying, you need to provoke their attention, revolutionize there thinking, this was what Christ did here.        To understand this better, note that He started this speech with “I came to bring fire on earth, How I wish this fire were already kindled”.

I came to bring Fire!

I came to bring Revolution! Fire of love! Fire of change! Change of heart! Change of mindset! I wish this fire were already kindled but since it’s not I choose you; I’ve taught you how, now go and kindle this fire in the hearts of men and women!

In the process, you will be seen as stupid, you will be called crazy and blind. You will be persecuted for your faith in my name. You will be rejected by your loved ones, your family and friends will call you enemy but remember! …I already told you all this would happen.

BE STRONG! YOU ARE FIGHTING A GOOD FIGHT! …YOU ARE KEEPING THEM SAFE!
